In later seasons, space combat becomes laser chess in three dimensions. Position matters. Angles matter. A laser travels in a straight line β the strategy around it does not. The audience learns the game by watching the crew play it under pressure.
Behind the scenes: how we actually built the laser battle π¬β¨
Every "making of" has bloopers. Below is our real, honest work-in-progress folder β every attempt it took to get a laser bouncing correctly between mirror-drones in 3D space, from an AI guessing freehand, all the way to a real physics simulation dressed up in cinematic style. π§© What is Blender? (click to learn β no tech background needed)
Blender is a free, professional 3D program β the same kind of software used to make real movies and video games. An AI image generator paints a picture based on guessing what "should" look right. Blender is different: it builds an actual tiny 3D world with real objects, real cameras and real light, then calculates, mathematically, exactly where every ray of light travels. We needed that here, because we wanted our laser beams to bounce off the mirror-drones using the real "law of reflection" β the same simple rule that makes the mirror in your bathroom work β instead of an AI's artistic guess.

MCP ("Model Context Protocol") is like a universal remote control that lets an AI assistant directly operate other software β in our case, Blender β instead of just chatting about it. Normally an AI can only talk in text. With MCP, the AI can actually place objects, aim cameras, and press "render" inside Blender itself, by writing a little bit of code that MCP turns into real actions on Nir's computer. That's how a text conversation turned into an actual 3D-rendered laser battle.
Stage 1 β AI alone, freehand, no physics π¨
Our first attempts asked GPT 5.4 Image 2 to simply paint a laser bouncing off a mirror-drone, with no 3D math behind it at all β pure artistic guessing. After a lot of effort with carefully written prompts, the best it could reliably manage was a clean "V" bounce off a single drone. Beautiful pictures β but there was no real geometry underneath them, no guarantee the angles were actually correct.

Stage 2 β Real physics, cartoon look, simple scene π
Next we moved the whole scene into Blender, where the laser's path is not painted but genuinely computed from the law of reflection. The angles are now 100% correct β but Blender's own default render style looks flat and cartoonish, not cinematic. This is the "simple" version: just a handful of drones and two ships.

Then we handed the physically-correct Blender scene to GPT 5.4 Image 2 as a reference and asked it to repaint the whole picture in one single pass, keeping the geometry intact. The result: the same accurate bounce angles as Stage 2, but now looking like an actual movie still.

Feeling confident, we scaled the physics way up: a dense "laser chess board" of over 40 drones, with the beam threading a genuine zigzag through the crowd. Still Blender's flat default look, but now the geometry itself is doing something much harder β and it's still all real, computed reflection.

The peak of this experiment: the full 40-plus-drone "laser chess board," repainted by GPT 5.4 Image 2 in one single pass from the Blender reference β real computed geometry and a genuinely cinematic look, together, in a scene far more complex than where we started. This is the best honest result of the whole experiment, and where we're picking up from next.
(After this, we tried something fancier still β splitting the beams and the ships into two separate layers to combine them with even more precision. That experiment didn't hold up under a close look, so we've paused it. Everything above is the solid, real progress we're building forward from.)

In 1990 the US Air Force flew the Relay Mirror Experiment (RME) β a ground laser was bounced off an orbiting mirror satellite to a target board hundreds of kilometers away, precisely to prove beam-relay combat geometry. Your scene is an extrapolation of a real, tested military concept.
One friendly physics twist on the "special metal alloy": metal mirrors absorb ~1β5% of the beam β against a weapons-grade laser, the mirror itself vaporizes. Real relay mirrors (and our canon's silicon carbide discs) use dielectric coatings β stacked ceramic layers reflecting 99.99%+ β on a stiff substrate. So: in principle EXACTLY like this, in materials, ceramic beats alloy. Tink would agree. π

Each main character receives a Romantic-era leitmotif. It may whisper on a solo violin when she is alone, darken into low strings when she is afraid, and bloom through the whole orchestra when she finally chooses.
